Shannan Young, RDN, SNS

Shannan has fond childhood memories of growing up on her family farm where mealtimes were always fresh, local and delicious. With a belief that everyone should have access to healthy foods and the skills to prepare them she has focused her career on the role of nutrition and food systems in public health.

Shannan’s broad experiences range from program development, management and evaluation, research and its translation, multisectoral partnerships, and consensus building. A strategic change maker with more than 20 years of experience working at local and state levels in school nutrition, agriculture, food, and nutrition education. She worked for the 5th largest school district in California where she transformed the school food environment including leading nutrition education for the 65,000 students. She then worked for the California Department of Education leading their statewide comprehensive nutrition education program before joining the nutrition education team at Dairy Council of California where she is serving as their Food Systems + Access Program Director.

She is a founding member of the Smarter Lunchrooms Movement of CA collaborative, the co-chair for the California Local School Wellness Policy Collaborative and is a three time co-chair of the Food Systems track for the California Childhood Obesity Conference. Trained as a registered dietitian and credentialed as a school nutrition specialist through the School Nutrition Association, she received her Bachelor of Science degree in community nutrition with a focus in psychology from University of California, Davis.
